The supercharger is making an unlikely comeback to the junior hot hatch class with the Toyota Yaris GRMN.
The most powerful Yaris will use a 1.8-litre supercharged petrol engine good for ‘more than 205bhp’, Autocar says.
That power, eclipsing the standard Ford Fiesta ST by at least 26bhp, comes with torque and throttle response that should make turbo rivals feel dim-witted by comparison. The stark, comic-book styling graphics will be a production feature, too.

GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Masters of Nurburgring, which, while sounding more like a bad Japanese video game from the mid-1990s, is a name that Toyota has applied to several cars in the Japanese domestic market.
It’s said that the Yaris, which will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, will be a three-door only. Cheaper, less aggressive models will have the option of three or five doors.
We don’t know official torque or performance figures yet, but the 0-62mph sprint time is expected to be among the fastest in the class, perhaps dropping as low as 6.0 seconds. Keep your eyes peeled for Geneva coverage to find out more.
